Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia: A Brief Overview for Professional Caregivers is a 1 hour course that provides a general overview of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. The course defines and differentiates Alzheimer's disease and dementia and lists common signs, symptoms and behaviors of both. Information is provided on effective behavioral interventions, valuing the person with AD or dementia, and respecting personal choices and uniqueness of the individual. It challenges the caregiver to change their perception of the person diagnosed with AD or dementia in more positive ways. The course ends by identifying environmental and safety issues.

Purpose

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of Alzheimer's disease and dementia and to use this information to improve care and quality of life for those diagnosed with Alzheimer's or a dementia.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss valuing the person with AD or dementia
  2. Discuss respecting personal choices and uniqueness
  3. Discuss how the professional caregiver can rethink views about AD or dementia
  4. Discuss common sense, back-to-basics environmental and safety issues and concerns 

Criteria for Successful Completion

To receive continuing education credit for this program, you must complete the entire course, including registration, viewing the video program, taking the post-test and obtaining a score of at least 70% or better, and completing the program evaluation. If you do not score a 70% or better, you may take the exam again as many times as necessary to receive a passing score. When a score of 70% or better is achieved, you will be able to move forward to the evaluation and receive your certificate online.
